The 25th is almost over but a late great Merry Christmas to you all. I’ve been saying this a lot with every post I make (which seems to be every two months) but the new year should bring hope to any of you HSB followers itching to have things updated a little more frequently (I’m looking at you Big Show). Regardless of my laziness I won’t bore you to details about how this website only pumps out a blog here or two…that should change in the new year.

My Dog not enjoying his Reindeer antlers

No hockey, no work, and late night Christmas usually means some quiet time in our families house which had me jump to the conclusion that I was going to pump out a blog and now that I see how slowly I am writing and posting blogs less frequently my writing skills seem to have all but diminished…if I ever had some to begin with.

It is Christmas though and I just wanted to wish everyone a beauty holidays, it’s been a busy couple of weeks for me, but of course its always busy throughout the winter months with hockey…hockey…work…work…hockey etc. Christmas time usually means a couple weeks off from playing and coaching but certainly not watching. Tomorrow embarks the beginning of the greatest hockey tournament on the planet, the World Junior Hockey Championships. Some will argue that the Stanley Cup Playoffs or Olympics are far greater but to that I say BOOO (or maybe boo urns).

Canada goes for Gold

Unlike in previous years with Canada opening up against lesser opponents the club will have its tournament opener against the Russians. No easy task, but neither is the pool Canada plays in this year. One thing is for certain if the Canadians are going to compete for gold they will definitly have to take the hard route to get there. Russia, Sweden, the Czech Republic, and Norway make up Pool B.

On the plus side it seems to be a safe assumption that every game will be entertaining, on the down side things wont come easy for the Canadians this season. I will say though that with all the nay sayers doubting this team it almost feels like a comparison to the World Juniors in Vancouver when Canada won the gold with all the experts doubting them then as well.

Puck drops tomorrow at 2pm (mountain time)…if your a Canadian hockey fan and not watching tomorrow shame on you!

24-7

NHL and HBO's 24/7

I feel so spoiled this Christmas season. World Junior, Oilers road trip (I’ll get to that), the Winter Classic, and the latest thing to be a huge hit, 24/7′s Road To The Winter Classic featuring a behind the scenes look of both hockey clubs partaking in the event, the Washington Capitals and the Pittsburgh Penguins.

As a full blown hockey addict it always intrigues me to see behind the scenes stuff from the NHL. Being a huge fan of the NFL I have always said the way the league maintains it’s NFL films, NFL network, and behind the scenes features its better then no one. Getting more people intrigued by the game of hockey should start with the same formula. Give an insight into the game and ultimately the players and coaches to get people interested…and finally the NHL and it’s hockey clubs have started promoting this.

Earlier this season Oiler fans were privileged to watch the documentary Oil Change…a look at the Edmonton Oilers and there decent back up from the basement of the NHL starting with their first ever first overall selection in the NHL Entry Draft…where they ultimately took Taylor Hall.

While Oil Change has been a big hit amongst people like me I dont think it is nearly as well done as HBO’s 24/7. The inside look of two of the games biggest superstars as they prepare to face off against each other in the NHL’s annual spectacle the Winter Classic. I dont think HBO could have asked for a better story, sure we had two of the leagues most marketable stars and teams but amidst all of that were two teams headed in opposite directions. The Penguins on a long winning streak, Crosby on a 23 game point streak, and a team and coach having a good time. On the opposite side of the ice the Capitals on there longest losing streak, Ovechkin in a slump, and a coach and team on the edge ready to explode.

The talk of course about the show has been all about Capitals coach Bruce Boudreau and his profanity filled speeches but anyone who plays hockey knows profanity is apart of the game…much like its apart of every game I’m sure. Everything about the show has been great however, from seeing the profanity, to Ovi still living with his parents, to rookie pranks, and of course to see the Penguins moustache boy and the scrimmage game played amongst the Pens staff.

Been a great series so far and I can only hope the NHL uses this towards more television specials.

Oilers Road Trip

Oilers Road Trip Oh Oh

Speaking of special…say hello to our special Oilers road trip. This will be year two and if it’s anything like last year we may not make it back alive. Last year featured plenty of heroin beers, the World Juniors, Olympic announcements, projectile vomiting, amateur video, sea donkeys, pizza…and more pizza. We will just leave it at that.

This years crew is a little different but ridiculous none the less. Best part of all this…coming back heading into 90s on 9 at our new place for New Years…with the said

90s New years

If you have no plans I suggest you join us…shaping up to be a great time. Come over whenever you want, we will be rushing back to try and partake in the annual New Years eve tradition of catching the World Junior game followed by ridiculousness.

Until then I hope to bring you all some stories from the next week to be!
